Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
