Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
