Over two dozen Olympic medal winners, coaches and other international athletes have put their names to a letter urging a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and trainer, who is on death row in Iran.

Increasing International Outrage

During rising worldwide anger over the country's escalating use of executions as a instrument of oppression, the forcefully phrased letter denounces the authorities's decision to confirm the death sentence of the boxing champion.

The athlete, 30, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for participating in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and accused of supporting an opposition group. He has endured 60 months in detention, where he has been mistreated and held in isolation.

“Competition is designed to promote optimism, solidarity, and bravery,” the supporters wrote. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his opinions is a blatant attack on these principles and a warning to any competitor who dares to voice opinions.

The letter pointed out that the boxer's circumstances was not an isolated one and highlighted the country's history of executing athletes for their convictions, including a national team leader, leader of the football side, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the female volleyball side. Additional signatories to the letter include a yachting pioneer, who captained the first all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a prestigious sailing award; the previous leader of the national squad an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

Vafaei Sani was detained in the spring of 2020. The accusations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”.
